Stacey Korfiatis’ paintings question what happens when the subject is taken outside of the frame. Contrasting the tightly confined figures of her Enclosed series with the liberated subjects of her Threshold series, Korfiatis’ work explores the relationship between the subject and frame, examining the autonomy and (dis)empowerment of her muse.

Greek for in between Anámesa is neither a beginning nor endpoint, but instead a showcase of the fluidity of the space and work that manifested through the development from Korfiatis’ 2014 Enclosed series to her recent work Threshold.

Graeme Hildebrand Art Prize For Young Contemporary Artists

I am thrilled to have been shortlisted as a finalist in the Graeme Hildebrand Art Prize For Young Contemporary Artists.

I am honoured to have works selected for exhibition in both of the Painting and Drawing categories, alongside some other excellent young artists including three of my friends and peers, Troy Argyros, Yuria Okamura and Liz Gridley with whom I am thrilled to be considered on a par.

I will be showing one of my favourite paintings Paradise Lost? from my recent Threshold series, and an old favourite Family Tree (pictured above), which will be one of few public showings of this drawing.

Prizes range from $1,000 for Commendation to $15,000 for the Major Prize in painting showing competency across multi disciplines, and diversity of subject.

Announcements of the main prizes will take place at the Official Opening on Thursday 12 October.

The People’s Choice Award will be announced at the Official Closing at 4pm on Sunday 29 October. Make sure to see the work and cast your vote before then!

Threshold

A painting sits within its frame. Right? In Threshold, the new exhibition by Melbourne painter and jeweller Stacey Korfiatis, she challenges not only this conventional take on how a painting is presented, but also how both women artists are regarded and how female subjects are displayed in the male-dominated art world.

The six paintings in this stunning series of sculptural oil-on-canvas female nudes incorporate the raw wooden frames into the artwork themselves. It’s not often you see the painting literally sitting on top of its frame. The model interacts with the frame; sometimes she’s climbing onto it, looking strong and playful. Sometimes she’s underneath it, trapped and vulnerable. The inside of the frame is left blank, with only the empty space of the white wall behind showing through.

Milk Bar Mag caught up with Stacey and asked her about her artwork and where she draws inspiration from.

Subverting artistic conventions of presentation and function, Stacey Korfiatis seeks to surprise and challenge her audience. Rejecting the notion of play as only for children, Korfiatis is driven to create innovative works that deliver experiences, a theme that permeates both her 2- and 3-dimensional works.

Reimagining the 4-cornered archetype, Korfiatis’ painting incorporates sculptural 3-dimensional elements to enable her exploration of the relationship between the subject and frame. Her works discuss issues of autonomy and empowerment in relation to the subject and the question of whether the frame exists to imprison or protect.
